Fragments Victoria Lucas

Placement of TVs/TV as object and placed in relation to other objects, representing 'banal' everyday objects and occurrences. Almost still moments, contradiction of nature of film as moving image.

How does Lygia Pape's installation and printmaking work relate to one another? How does her exploration of the body through film relate to the geometric aesthetic that seems to characterize her use of these other mediums?

'My prints start with photographs I have taken of spaces I have seen, but have not been inside. I see these spaces through train windows, in museum dioramas, and in films. These are places always perceived through a screen or seen through glass. My work is about reconstructing an environment that is from the real world but can never be touched and is beyond our actual reach; this invisible barrier creates a sense of distance and the images in a separate time from our own. In my art I want to make the viewer question what is reality and what is illusion. I seek to break down the passive role of the viewer and create a sense of suspense or tension.'

Electric Chair, Andy Warhol

One tutor commented on the similarity of the images from the 'Gone' series to Warhol's electric chair, which is an aesthetic connection I had not recognised before.

Consequently I have decided to develop a series of screen prints from the photographs.
