Memorial Travel Project

During my year in Krakow I was struck by the number of memorials around the city and decided to create a photographic collection of them. It made me begin to think about what constitutes a memorial; for example on the one hand the war memorial and on the other, padlocks attached to the bridge by couples. On seeing the work one of my cultural studies lecturers commented on my categorisation of religious shrines as memorials, which I had done without question, showing up our assumptions and revealing my obsession to be with the objects left behind for remembrance; the objects and traces which stand in for and become memories.
